Resident Evil is a 2026 live-action reboot of Capcom’s hugely successful survival-horror franchise, written and directed by Zach Cregger, the filmmaker behind Barbarian and Weapons. The budget was apparently a hefty $75 million, presumably mainly for special effects, however the film made this back worldwide in its first-week opening.
Rather than remaking one of the games or continuing the previous film series, Cregger created an original story set within the Resident Evil universe and included some minor humour.
The film is positioned as survival horror than the action-heavy Milla Jovovich movies. That means scarcity, isolation, grotesque creatures, claustrophobia and the feeling of being hopelessly outmatched are major elements.
The movie stars Austin Abrams, Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, Johnno Wilson and Devon Stewart.
Plot:
Bryan (Austin Abrams) is a young medical courier who accepts what initially appears to be a routine delivery job. He is sent into an increasingly dangerous area and soon discovers that something has gone catastrophically wrong.

Bryan becomes trapped in the middle of a viral outbreak, with ordinary people transformed into zombies and increasingly grotesque mutated creatures. What begins as a delivery quickly becomes a desperate fight to stay alive as the situation spirals completely out of control.
