EXORCIST II: THE HERETIC (1977) Reviews of infamously awful sequel

Exorcist II: The Heretic is a 1977 American supernatural horror film and the sequel to The Exorcist, directed by John Boorman from a screenplay written by William Goodhart. The movie stars Linda Blair, Richard Burton (Bluebeard; The Medusa Touch), Louise Fletcher, Max von Sydow, James Earl Jones, Ned Beatty and Kitty Winn.

Plot:
Four years after the events in The Exorcist: Regan MacNeil is now a sixteen-year-old and still recovering from her previous demonic possession. Philip Lamont, a priest struggling with his faith, attempts to exorcise a possessed South American girl, who claims to “heal the sick.”

Afterwards, Lamont is assigned by the Cardinal to investigate the death of Father Lankester Merrin, who had been killed four years prior in the course of exorcising the Assyrian demon Pazuzu from Regan MacNeil. The Cardinal informs Lamont (who has had some experience at exorcism, and has been exposed to Merrin’s teachings) that Merrin is up on posthumous heresy charges due to his controversial writings. Apparently, Church authorities are trying to modernise and do not want to acknowledge that Satan as an actual evil entity exists…

Reviews:

“And like all of Boorman’s movies, The Heretic is a pretty spectacular visual experience, full of wild editing, unhinged special effects, insect-wing flights across desert landscapes and dream-like collages of overlapping imagery, all serving admirably to distract the viewer’s attention from the general vagueness re: what’s actually going on.” Breakfast in the Ruins
