LYCAN (2017) Reviews and overview

‘The beast has a name’

Lycan is a 2017 American horror film directed by Bev Land, making his feature debut, from a screenplay co-written with Michael Mordler. The movie stars Dania Ramirez, Jake Lockett, Rebekah Graf and Parker Croft.

When six college kids in a sleepy Southern town are assigned a group project to rediscover a moment in history, one of them sets in motion a horrific fate when he proposes they head into the Georgia backwoods to tackle the legend of Emily Burt, the Talbot County werewolf.

“The movie takes far too long to set up the premise and then more wasted time to set the kids up to get lost ala Blair Witch. Fortunately, the videotaped portions aren’t long but then they add nothing to the film either. The performances are well intended but for the most part on the poor side.” Digital Views

“The characters – multiracial as they might be – never rise above archetypes: sex-crazed stoner, rich bitch, sensitive jock, social justice warrior, etc. […] The end result is a solid independent horror feature, one with minimal beast action that requires a little patience and generosity.” Horror 101 with Doctor AC

” …the pinnacle moment of the third act springs too many leaks to plug. Combined with the stagnant and underdeveloped characters, Lycan is an unkempt story left wide open becoming a victim by it’s own scripted structure.” It’s Bloggin’ Evil!

“All the performers were believable in their roles. Moments between them did not feel forced instead they felt organic and true to life. This is a beautifully shot film […] What starts off as an exciting attempt at a new monster film suddenly turns into a predictable, staid slasher effort.” The Queen of Style

“There is this great level of suspense and mystery that is created by slowly letting the audience figure out what is going on, on their own, throughout the film’s 88 minutes runtime […] this film is able to pull off a nice mix of Hitchcockian thriller, werewolf lore, and the good old slasher flick tropes that we all love incredibly.” Repulsive Reviews
