‘Beware of the dog’

Directed by Jose Luis Montesinos from a screenplay co-written withYako Blesa, the movie stars Paula del Río, Miguel Ángel Jenner and Jordi Aguilar.

Plot:

With her sister’s death still very recent, Elena (Paula Del Rio), a young quadriplegic, has retired to a country house along with her father. There she has the help of Author, a Belgian Shepherd service dog. Unfortunately, the animal who is supposed to be her best friend has contracted a strange disease… and has turned into her worst enemy.

Reviews [click links to read more]:

“Director José Luis Montesinos makes full use of Elena’s disability and limitations, as well as the nuances of the old house to make a suspenseful horror. Given the premise and the constraints to her movements, at times it’s not the paciest film. However, this lack of pizzazz affords it a more authentic feel. Making Ropes a slight yet satisfying experience.” Backseat Mafia

“It is quite refreshing to see more disability representation in horror, with Paula del Rio’s performance really capturing the anxiety and depression that some people can feel following a life-changing accident. Couple this with a terrifying rabid dog and you have a recipe for tension-filled rollercoaster.” Bloody Flicks

“Sadly its soap opera elements gradually drown out the tension established by the initial beast vs human setup, to the point where the second half of the movie largely concentrates on Elena dealing with her own demons. Ropes is just a little too neatly obvious in its placing of elements within the story that will be returned to later on…” Dark Eyes of London

Ropes has oodles of charm and is effective at turning up the tension and fear factor as you find yourself in Elena’s shoes with the empty house even playing its role in Elena’s torment […] With an intensity that will certainly get your pulse racing, Ropes is a wonderfully-executed, calculated canine horror thriller that puts its own spin on a familiar exchange.

“There’s little new to Ropes‘ story; rather a refinement of old horror movie tropes and ideas. Montesinos and co-writer Yako Blesa have taken this killer dog story and crafted it into a bleak, gritty thriller that’s about grief, loss and a deep sense of guilt. Turns out you can teach an old dog new tricks.” Horror DNA

Release:

In the UK, Ropes will be available on Digital from November 19th 2020.
