‘This gang thought it was tough… ’til it found a new type of hell… The bride of Satan!’
Werewolves on Wheels is a 1971 American exploitation film that blends two genres: the outlaw biker film and the traditional horror movie. It was directed by Michel Levesque (the art director for many Russ Meyer films) from a screenplay co-written with David M. Kaufman (Girls on the Road) and stars Stephen Oliver and Severn Darden.

As a group of bikers moves across the desert, they come across an old church that a satanic cult has taken over. The cultists give them drugged food, and the bikers soon fall asleep. That night the cultists cast a curse on the biker leader’s girlfriend that makes her turn into a werewolf after nightfall; she soon infects her boyfriend.

The bikers leave the church and begin to be killed off whenever they stop for the night. Things come to a climax when the couple changes in front of the bikers, who quickly kill the beasts. The bikers return to the church to enact their revenge but stop when they see themselves in the cult-procession…

“With decent performances, some fair fileting, and impressive makeup (he looks just like the cartoon poster!), Werewolves on Wheels offers enough entertainment value to wear its title of “best satanic werewolf biker movie” proudly. Sure, it’s the only one, but that’s even more reason to dig it. You dig?” Daily Dead

“Don’t be fooled by the fantastic title. Werewolves on Wheels delivers very little of what it advertises. It’s much more Easy Rider than it is The Howling. So if you are in the mood for a more slow, almost art-house horror film, give it a shot. If not, don’t bother.” DVD In My Pants

Wheels isn’t going to enlighten you. It isn’t going to make you look at bikers or Satanists in a different light. It’s just going to give you some good old-fashioned drive-in enjoyment. And sometimes, that’s what it’s all about.” Horror Talk

“A particularly generous viewer might even read Werewolves on Wheels as a parable about the sidelining of subcultural spirituality as the sixties segued into the seventies. A less generous viewer, on the other hand, may well see the film as a meandering and aimless piece of work that sometimes stumbles into the occasionally effective scene.” Killer Horror Critic

“Given most of the cast were non-actors and real bikers; it’s not surprising there’s very little dialogue. But this does allow for Don Gere’s psychedelic country score – all twangy guitars and beefy riffs with a scratchy Basil Kirchin bent – to hold sway.” Kultguy’s Keep

Werewolves on Wheels is a fast-paced, entertaining and psychedelic bikesploitation flick that mixes in a lot of horror elements. You’ll get really sucked into the plot and immediately feel like you’re a part of the Devil’s Advocates riding their hogs down the highway.” Repulsive Cinema
