SPACE JAM: A NEW LEGACY (2021) Reviews and overview

Space Jam: A New Legacy is a 2021 American animated-live action-adventure film featuring LeBron James and the Looney Tunes characters. The movie is a belated sequel to Space Jam (1996).

Directed by Malcolm D. Lee from a screenplay co-written by Keenan Coogler, Terence Nance, Tony Rettenmaier and Juel Taylor.

Reviews:

“Where the film can’t quite find its balance is in its depictions of humour aimed for the adults likely to be in tow with their young tykes.  Whilst it would be asking too much for A New Legacy to provide genuine comedic wit, the fact that the six-person strong script manages to deliver some truly wild visual treats solely for older audiences…” The Au Review

“All the right messages are here, and director Malcolm D. Lee (Girls Trip) has merged the live-action and animation elements together in delightful fashion, though really no more effectively than in the original. James isn’t headed to the Oscars for this performance any time soon, but he acquits himself nicely as himself. The real acting honors belong to Cheadle, who seems to be having a blast playing the heavy.” Deadline

” …Space Jam: A New Legacy isn’t really a story, or even a movie. It’s a video game you can’t play and a theme park you can’t explore […] As the audience we are forever stuck there, gaping over the fence at bright lights and dizzying rides on the other side of the threshold.” Flicks

“Your children won’t understand the cultural references and cameos or likely have any clue who the Looney Tunes characters are, but they’ll certainly enjoy their slapstick antics and the high-energy action on the court. Splashes of nostalgia and homage can be a wonderful thing, but this sequel rarely takes the time to stand on its own two feet. It’s far too busy mining existing IP to distract you from its generic screenplay and the inescapable fact you’ve seen this all before.” The Jam Report

“It’s great to see Bugs and the gang back in action, although a rapping Porky Pig is a step too far. In fact, the whole soundtrack makes us yearn to be watching the ’96 film at times and underlines how bad music is these days […] If you take this iteration of Space Jam as a satire of the entertainment industry, you’ll enjoy it more than you’d imagine and realise it’s not a complete misfire.” Starburst

“Warner Bros.’ hellbent fixation on smashing its own characters together […] feels like the endgame of a Hollywood that has become more focused on intellectual property rights than innovation. That’s the sour take. The bittersweet counterargument is that Lee’s massive sandbox allows him to seed curiosity about cinema history in kiddie audiences who’ve just come for the slapstick.” Variety
