‘Never underestimate a mother’s intuition’

False Positive is a 2021 American horror film about a young woman who sets out to uncover the unsettling truth about her fertility doctor.

Directed by John Lee from a screenplay co-written with Ilana Glazer, the A24 production stars Justin Theroux, Pierce Brosnan, Sophia Bush, Sullivan Jones, Gretchen Mol and Ilana Glazer.

After months of trying and failing to get pregnant, Lucy (Ilana Glazer) and Adrian (Justin Theroux) finally find their dream fertility doctor in the illustrious Doctor Hindle (Pierce Brosnan).

However, after becoming pregnant with a healthy baby girl, Lucy begins to notice something sinister through Hindle’s gleaming charm, and she sets out to uncover the unsettling truth about him and her own “birth story.” As if getting pregnant weren’t complicated enough…

“Lee and Glazer ensure Lucy’s idiosyncratic journey is provocative, delivering scathing commentary without ever letting its lead off the hook for her flaws. The drastic tonal shifts can induce whiplash. It’s the type of audacious feature that leaves you unsure of what you’re watching but unable to get it out of your head long after the credits roll.” Bloody Disgusting

False Positive might not quite stick the landing, but it’s a juicy genre entry about how women’s reproductive systems are treated like coveted real estate — expertly crafted in terms of its visual command and well-acted by a strong ensemble. Brosnan is deliciously diabolical, albeit mostly while maintaining a veneer of warmth…” The Hollywood Reporter

” …while the film does offer plenty of explanations at its conclusion, they mostly feel cobbled together from other films and other stories, unable to be at all satisfying as part of the chintzy milieu on offer here. Other choices rankle in their own way, again hinting at something far more clever lurking deep under the film’s surface.” IndieWire

“In addition to a thorough examination of childbirth, False Positive carries several ‘WTF’ moments that will have people buzzing for sure […] False Positive meditates on touchy topics while soaking its psychological horror delights in blood and mania. It made me uncomfortable and puzzled while watching—an instant mark of effective filmmaking.” Josh at the Movies

“It’s a powerful slow-burn that may not quite lean enough into outright horror for some audiences, and leaves the viewer with more questions than answers while stretching the plausibility of the premise throughout the many twists and turns—some of which you can see coming a mile away—but ultimately, False Positive is a disorienting mind f*ck.” Killer Horror Critic

” …trippy imagery and visceral horror that forces your jaw to drop – and maybe makes you heave a little bit […] False Positive is sinister, smart, and spine-chilling. For all of its razor-sharp political commentary, the film boasts a wicked satirical edge that’s driven home by absolute terror. At every level, it’s a knockout.” Nightmarish Conjurings

“The movie is crisply shot by Pawel Pogorzelski (Midsommar), with anxious cuts between bright offices and dark hallways. There are ominously edited portents and a score that starts at fever pitch and rarely pulls back. But the frayed strands of the horror plot feel hastily woven together, and underwhelming when all is revealed.” The Warp
