Teddy is a 2020 French comedy horror film about a young man who is scratched by an unknown beast and slowly undergoes frightening changes.

Written and directed by Ludovic Boukherma and Zoran Boukherma making their feature debut. Produced by Pierre-Louis Garnon and Frédéric Jouve.

The movie stars Anthony Bajon, Ludovic Torrent, Christine Gautier, Noémie Lvovsky, Guillaume Mattera, Jean-Paul Fabre, Alexis Orlandini, Gérard Pau and Jean-Michel Ricart.

Plot:

Twentysomething Teddy lives in a foster home and works as a temp in a massage parlour. Rebecca, his girlfriend, will soon graduate. A scorching hot summer begins. But Teddy is scratched by a beast in the woods: the wolf that local angry farmers have been hunting for months. As weeks go by, animal impulses soon start to overcome the young man…

Reviews:

“The Boukherma siblings write and direct brilliantly, happy to let things unfold at a pace that forces viewers to spend time with an unappealing lead character before things really start to get interesting […] Teddy isn’t an easy film to enjoy, certainly not for the first third of the runtime, but it will reward viewers who stick with it.” For It Is Man’s Number

“The Boukhermas don’t sink their teeth into the question of whether the lycanthropy is a metaphor for Teddy’s rage. But their movie ends with a scene of Carrie-style carnage that shows their potential to be cinema’s brothers grim.” The Guardian

“You won’t see the actual transformation and what we do see works in a very believable way. In other words, seeing the werewolf is not (in any way!) part of the comedy element of this movie […] Overall, the humor is very dark, so be ready for that […] What works really well (apart from the werewolf scenes themselves) are the performances by the actors.” Heaven of Horror

“The horror side of things is fairly light and while that’s not a detractor for me, it might be for some. Don’t go in expecting non-stop gore. Cinematography is great, using the natural hilly landscape of rural France. Overall Teddy is an enjoyable film that made me smile […] You don’t need a massive budget to have fun. Horror has proven that countless times.” Horror Obsessive

” …the reason it works is Bajon’s amiably brutish performance. A horror film is rarely worth its weight in carnage if it can’t engender some empathy, provoke some tragedy. Thanks to Bajon and a strong ensemble around him, the film makes you feel something for an enemy you might rather just hate.” MaddWolf

“While Teddy doesn’t quite land, there’s no doubt a lot of talent on display here. As directors, the Boukhermas have done a remarkable job of mining performances from a largely inexperienced cast […] It’s leading man Bajon who leaves the greatest impression, his awkward charm going a long way to humanising a character that could have easily just been a one-note, annoying teen archetype.” The Movie Waffler
