‘Fight your way out’

Borrego is a 2022 survival thriller about a young female botanist who is kidnapped in the desert by a drug mule.

Written and directed by Jesse Harris (Living Life). Produced by Nancy Cartwright, Monica Gil-Rodriguez, Jesse Harris, Greg Lauritano, Damiano Tucci and Tiziano Tucci.

The movie stars Lucy Hale (Fantasy Island; Blumhouse’s Truth or Dare; Scream 4; Fear Island), Leynar Gómez, Olivia Trujillo, Jorge A. Jimenez and Nicholas Gonzalez.

Plot:

Elly (Lucy Hale) is a young botanist on a research mission that goes awry. After witnessing a drug mule’s plane crash in the Borrego desert, she is kidnapped and forced on a dangerous journey to a remote drop off point.

With limited essentials and alone in the desert with her captor, desperation for survival takes hold as Elly risks her life to escape from his clutches before the trip turns deadly…

Reviews:

“There are times when a strong premise and competent cast are enough to carry a movie. That is mostly the case with Borrego. Lucy Hale gets the most out of a bare-bones character while the plot has its moments of excitement. An uneven script does not hamper the more entertaining moments.” AIPT

” …it’s not much of a nail-biter, remaining somewhere indistinct and somewhat familiar. The picture is clearly in need of a more focused, tighter edit, but Harris has his moments of atmosphere with Borrego, and there’s an interesting idea concerning the ease of addiction that’s worth exploring, just not in this movie.” Blu-ray.com

“Let me make this clear: Borrego is not awful by any means, but it is simply not that great. In nearly every way, the nails could have been tightened to make for an experience far richer in personality and power. The emotional core is missing, seemingly stricken from the record. The experience itself is rather empty, minus an excellent Lucy Hale turn.” Josh at the Movies

Borrego isn’t a groundbreaking film. But it’s a serviceable journey across the California desert that layers a suitable amount of substance to warrant a one-time watch. The acting overall is pretty good, the cast fills out the characters nicely, and the natural backdrops and settings are a decent playground for this story.” Silver Screen Analysis
