Release date:
Dark Glasses had its world premiere at the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival which was held from February 10th to 20th 2022. It is now available for streaming on Shudder.

Background:
The Wild Bunch company has provided the following plot background by Argento:

“Set against the backdrop of Rome and its surrounding countryside, it brings together the contrasting worlds of a high-class prostitute working in the chic hotels around Rome’s Via Veneto and a young boy hailing from the city’s Chinese community.

“She’s an adult and blind, he’s too young to get by on his own. In addition, two different cultures: she is Italian, the child is Chinese. This combination is the engine of Dark Glasses.

Development:
Based on a 2002 screenplay by Dario Argento and Franco Ferrini that was shelved when Cecchi Gori, the production company, filed for bankruptcy.

In an April 2020 update reported by The Film Stage, it was suggested that Daft Punk would be handling the soundtrack score: “They are my admirers, they know all my cinema,” Argento says. “They heard from French friends that I was shooting a new film and called me [to say], ‘We want to work with you.’”

Argento’s previous project The Sandman, with Iggy Pop slated to be its protagonist, languished in development since 2014.

Prior to this new project, Dario’s last film was the appallingly laughable Dracula 3D, the dreary Giallo (2009) and the lamentable late-in-the-day sequel The Mother of Tears (2007).
