Reviews:
Evil Dead Rise gives us plenty of thrills and kills to make us all squirm and gleefully cheer in our seats. The formula here isn’t reinventing the wheel, but it is trying to get us excited about the endless opportunities that can still be found in the most reliable horror franchise in Hollywood. With this, we should all be curious to see what comes next and expect it to be a bloody good time.” Grade: B, Awards Watch

” …the performances from Lily Sullivan and Alyssa Sutherland truly stand out here. They each deliver wide-ranging performances that transform greatly as the mayhem sets in, setting the stage for a series of incredible confrontations throughout the course of the film. While the plot beats may be overly familiar, Evil Dead Rise delivers everything you want from a horror movie. Groovy!” Bad Feeling

“There’s a commendable thoughtfulness here when approaching certain recurring elements of the franchise. Evil Dead Rise is nowhere near as nihilistic as the previous entry, yet it’s frequently as intense. A fantastic pair of leads in Sullivan and Sutherland- especially Sutherland- combined with an endless slew of franchise tributes and unhinged levels of viscera ensure a gruesomely great time at the movies.” 3.5 out of 5, Bloody Disgusting

“In an Evil Dead film, I want humor, buckets of blood, gnarly deaths, and a vice grip of dread as the hero tries to survive the night. Evil Dead Rises delivers this all in spades. It taps into the terrifying and brutal nature of how the franchise started, puts the pedal to the floor, and doesn’t stop. With near-perfect pacing, stellar performances, and an embrace of erratic violence, Lee Cronin has crafted a tremendous entry into the Evil Dead franchise.” 9 out of 10, But Why Tho?

“The 2013 Evil Dead pic was a bit more self-serious than the films before it. Maybe that was Raimi and Rob Tapert’s effort to shift things in a new direction, but it didn’t quite work. Although this premise takes place in the city, as opposed to the woods, Evil Dead Rise feels like a real return to form. It’s funny, absurd, gory, bleak and will keep viewers on edge — just how fans like it.” Deadline

” …Lee Cronin has more tricks up his sleeves that even dedicated fans of this series won’t see coming. From the beginning, the filmmaker is having the time of his life planting visual cues for what are soon to be some gruesome and extremely memorable kills. Evil Dead Rise gets impressively creative in this aspect as it utilizes its LA apartment setting to the fullest.” 4 out of 5, Discussing Film

“The sound effects of the Deadites movement, the look of the book itself, the relentless carnage throughout, the fact that there is so much that not even the red band trailers have prepared you for. This is an Evil Dead movie made by Evil Dead fans for Evil Dead fans. I may very well have to stand on this hill and declare Evil Dead Rise the best Evil Dead movie ever made.” Fan Carpet

Evil Dead Rise will please longtime fans with its intense gore (the film reportedly uses over 6,500 litres of fake blood), absurd hamminess, and terrific one-liners, but it will also seduce newcomers with its startling dynamism and unrelenting energy. Furthermore, Evil Dead Rise is wholly more scary than any previous entry in the series…” 4 out of 5, Flickering Myth

“Is it worth a look inward at the sheer joy we take in dismembering others? Probably. But I’m not going to take the time when I’m being entertained like this. Lee Cronin, cast, and crew have delivered a romp of a horror film that honors the legacy and tradition of Sam Raimi’s films, as well as charts its own course forward. A new backdrop, setup, and creative team have cracked the code to this franchise…” 7.5 out of 10, The Hollywood Outsider

“Any way you slice this sticky-gooey-bloody charge into the next chapter of Evil Dead storytelling, it’s a success. Evil Dead Rise is a fantastic blend of franchise adoration, fresh storytelling, and all-out horror entertainment. Lee Cronin delivers an Evil Dead film that’s disgustingly slathered in gory bits and offers the fun-loving vibes.” IGN

“With any entry into the Evil Dead franchise, practical effects are a requirement. The body horror and kill scenes in Cronin’s film are imaginative and brutal. There are multiple scenes that will evoke a physical reaction, whether that’s from disgust or delight […] Cronin’s Evil Dead Rise is a blood-soaked blast. He summons all of the best aspects of the franchise, while still creating a beast all his own that can boldly stand apart from the series.” IndieWire

” …Evil Dead Rise feels like any other horror/slasher I could see anywhere else, and that’s made even worse when I see so many opportunities that aren’t taken advantage of. There’s not even really that much black humor, and when it does pop up, it feels out of place with the rest of the look and tone. The score and jump-scares are also annoyingly overbearing…” Loud and Clear

“There are also enough callbacks throughout for fans of the originals to be satisfied, and enough for new fans to jump right in without seeing anything before. Without spoiling too much there are two performances of demonic possession that will make your stomach crawl. Added to those performances are some of the best makeup and visual effects in any recent horror movie.” 4 out of 5, Nerdly

“While Evil Dead Rise brought quite a few changes to the forty-year-old franchise, there were still a lot of similarities in how the newcomer Cronin handled the well-loved material of the previous films and series. With plenty of nods and winks to the original films, Cronin still creates enough of his own world and monsters to stand strongly beside (but separately) from Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead.” Nightmarish Conjurings

“At 97 minutes, with plenty of levity mixed into the action, it feels like it’s over almost as soon as it begins. It’s a perfect onboarding movie for newer audiences who’ve never seen an Evil Dead movie, but for longtime fans, it breathes new air into a classic horror-comedy franchise, mixing Raimi’s old-school approach with the new school of gruesome horror.” Polygon

” …for a relatively unknown cast led by a relatively unseasoned director, it does accomplish a lot, particularly in terms of its physical performances—think complicated rigging devices and ghastly prosthetic makeups—and gnarly gore. Once it gets out of its own way and gives the audience what they came to see, Evil Dead Rise is an absolute blast.” 3 out of 5, RogerEbert.com

“Among other things, Evil Dead Rise may be the loudest horror film to hit screens in a long time, and as such, it’s gratifying that it escaped a streaming-debut fate to see theatrical release, where its assaultive approach can have its fullest effect. Like Fede Alvarez’s 2013 reboot, Rise demonstrates that there’s still life in Dead these four decades later and that Cronin, along with creators Raimi, Bruce Campbell and Rob Tapert, who served as producers here, didn’t have to water down the guiding vision to get it into the mainstream.” Rue Morgue

“As fun as it is, this movie still treads through familiar territory. The film has been reconstructed in an urban context and the story shifts from the historic precedence of a group of young adults in a cabin in the woods to a core family. And yet, you can see the skeleton of the Evil Dead easily peeking through its ghoulish skin. And for a franchise, I think that’s perfectly fine.” 4 out of 5, The Scariest Things

” …enables Cronin to spring at least two shamelessly efficient jump scares by framing characters in the foreground blissfully unaware of bad things popping up in the background. In keeping with Evil Dead tradition, there’s also an abundance of bloody mayhem that increases exponentially until a hugely satisfying and splatterific climax. And yes, to answer the inevitable question: A chainsaw figures into the mix, as does the iconic phrase “Dead by dawn!” Variety

“The future of the Evil Dead franchise is so bright with the release of Evil Dead Rise, so bright indeed— and boldly, beautifully covered in the blood of everyone we may hold dear. Evil Dead Rise doesn’t shy away from what makes the franchise so great: rivers of blood, unrelenting evil wearing familiar faces, and ingenious weaponry in the standing off against the demonic unknown.” The Wrap
