Plot:
Set during the Semarang Regency, where a young girl with eerie behaviour becomes the centre of a terrifying mystery. As she grows, the village is plagued by the unexplained disappearances of children, leading to widespread fear and suspicion. Despite the villagers’ desperate attempts to appease the malevolent force through rituals and offerings, the terror only intensifies as they realise Sumala seeks something far more sinister… their children.

Reviews:
“For traditional horror fans, the redeeming factor about Sumala is how the demon gleefully and ruthlessly murders everybody. A lot of those murder scenes are over-the-top, excessively gory, and also highly unrealistic. For those simply looking for a no-brainer horror movie filled with deaths, madness, and some good old melodrama featuring a dysfunctional family ruled by an authoritarian father and a mute mother, this makes for a decent one-time watch.” ★★½ Abstract AF!
“Sumala isn’t perfect, but it’s gripping. It’s a ghost story with a bite, a revenge tale that makes you think twice, and a horror movie that actually tries to be more than just a collection of scares. It may not completely escape the conventions of the genre, but it bends them just enough to leave a lasting impression. And if nothing else, it serves as an excellent reminder: if a mysterious shaman offers you a deal, just say no.” 5.5/10 Midgard Times
“The movie creates an excellent (even if horribly created) sense of isolation and pain for young Kumala […] Once unleashed, it is a full bloodbath, and nothing seems to be off the table […] There is violence toward younger people and babies that people won’t like or want to accept in movies.” ★★★★ Movie Reviews 101
” …this film is indeed just exploitation of violence. They do violence because it sells. There is no camera play or other elegant treatment. Luna Maya is just there putting on a horror face, waiting to be killed. That’s why in the real world climate where there are many cases of violence…” My Dirt Sheet
“Sumala‘s saviour is Makayla Rose, who plays two personalities in the figure of a ten-year-old child. Both as a girl who experiences various sufferings (growing up disabled, being bullied by boys, and being shackled by her parents), or a devil child who likes to play with her potential victims (mostly in scenes with sharp weapons), the little actress has performed well.” 5/10 Notes on Hobbies
