‘A monstrous secret hides in the deep’
Kraken is a 2026 creature feature monster eco horror film set in the deep fjords of Norway. The story follows marine biologist Johanne, whose investigation into mysterious disturbances around a fish farm leads to the discovery of a legendary sea monster lurking in the depths of Norway’s deepest fjords.
Kraken has been compared to classic aquatic monster movies such as Jaws, relying heavily on suspense, unseen threats, and mounting dread before revealing its colossal creature. Critics generally praised the fjord scenery and environmental message, though reactions to the creature effects were more mixed.
Directed by Pål Øie from a screenplay by Vilde Eide, Kjersti Helen Rasmussen and Natasha Arthur, based on a story by Pål Øie and Sjur Aarthun.
The movie stars Sara Khorami, Mikkel Bratt Silset, Ingvild Holthe Bygdnes, Øyvind Brandtzæg, Jenny Evensen, Steinar Klouman Hallert, Filip Bargee Ramberg and Hans Morten Hansen.
Plot ([contains spoilers]:
Johanne is conducting research at a salmon fish farm in the village of Vangsnes when a series of strange events begins to unfold. Fish behave erratically, wildlife flees the area, and two local teenagers are brutally killed under mysterious circumstances. As evidence accumulates, Johanne suspects that something enormous is moving through the depths of the fjord.
Her investigation reveals that the fish farm has been using powerful sonic technology to combat sea lice infestations. The constant underwater noise has disturbed the ecosystem and awakened an ancient creature—the Kraken—a gigantic cephalopod-like monster that has rested undisturbed on the fjord floor for centuries.

As the Kraken attacks boats, docks, and fish-farm infrastructure, panic spreads throughout the community. The monster appears drawn to the disruptive sound waves produced by the farm’s equipment. Attempts to fight it with conventional weapons prove ineffective, and several residents are killed as the creature’s tentacles devastate the waterfront.
In the climax, Johanne realises that the same sonic technology responsible for awakening the Kraken may also be the key to stopping it. She devises a risky plan to lure the creature away from the survivors using concentrated sonic devices. The ensuing confrontation results in heavy casualties and the destruction of much of the fish-farm complex. According to the film’s ending, the Kraken is apparently killed by the sonic blast, though the final moments suggest the threat may not be entirely over…

Verdict:
Overall, Kraken is a straightforward creature feature with strong Scandinavian atmosphere, impressive fjord locations, and an environmental cautionary message about human interference with nature. While it doesn’t reinvent the monster-movie formula, it delivers suspense, large-scale destruction, and a modern interpretation of the legendary Kraken myth.
