Stepfather is a 2026 psychological horror thriller about a serial killer obsessed with creating the “perfect” family.
The movie was written and directed by Chris Stokes (House Part 4: Down to the Last Minute; You Got Served; Adopted; Run). The Tubi production stars Taye Diggs, Tamar Braxton, Kalani Jules, Jessica Jarrell, Janeline Hayes and Dante Brown.
Plot:
Darnell (Taye Diggs) believes he has finally found the family he has always wanted when he marries Asia (Tamar Braxton) and becomes stepfather to her daughters. At first he appears caring, dependable, and devoted.
However, beneath the surface lies a violent obsession with control and perfection. As family tensions emerge and his dark past begins to unravel, Darnell resorts to increasingly extreme measures to maintain the image of the flawless family he believes he deserves. When Asia and her daughters begin to suspect something is terribly wrong, they find themselves fighting for survival…
Background:
The Stepfather (1987) starred Terry O’Quinn as a serial killer who repeatedly murders families and adopts new identities in search of the perfect household. It was loosely inspired by real-life murderer John List.
A sequel, Stepfather II: Make Room for Daddy – also starring Terry O’Quinn – was released in 1989. In 1992, Stepfather III: Father’s Day arrived with Robert Wightman as the deranged daddy who has altered his appearance using plastic surgery.
The 2026 Tubi film uses essentially the same core premise — a killer stepfather obsessed with family perfection — but it is not being marketed as a remake of the 1987 classic. Instead, it appears to be a modern reimagining or reinterpretation of the concept. The original was remade in 2009 starring Dylan Walsh and Penn Badgley.
Release:
Stepfather premieres on Tubi on June 19, 2026, as one of their ‘Original’ releases.
