Incomplete Chairs is a 2025 splatter horror film about an obsessive and increasingly unhinged chair craftsman who is determined to create what he considers the perfect chair.

This is not a conventional serial-killer thriller. It’s much closer to Japanese underground/body horror. The film deliberately takes an utterly mundane object — a chair — and turns it into something grotesque.

The chair becomes a metaphor for the ridiculous lengths people can go to in pursuit of perfection, prestige and artistic recognition. The fact that Kujō’s supposedly original designs are themselves accused of being copies adds another layer: his obsession with creating the “perfect” object is bound up with status, imitation and the desire to be recognised as an artist.

The movie was directed by Kenichi Ugana from a screenplay co-written with Suisui Fukaido.

Plot:
The film revolves around Shinsuke Kujō, an obsessive and increasingly unhinged chair craftsman who is determined to create what he considers the perfect chair. His approach to furniture design is, to put it mildly, unconventional.

Kujō advertises for workers and uses the people who come to his studio as victims. He begins collecting human body parts — particularly bones and skin — as raw materials for his ultimate chair. The official synopsis describes him killing people to obtain the components he believes are necessary to construct the proper “framework”.

Things become more complicated when Natsuko Kato, a professional furniture buyer, takes an interest in Kujō and his work. She becomes increasingly impressed by him, both professionally and personally, without initially understanding what is actually happening in his workshop.

Meanwhile, Natsuko’s colleague Uchida/Masaki becomes suspicious. He points out that Kujō’s supposedly brilliant furniture designs are actually imitations of foreign designs. This raises the obvious question: if Kujō isn’t simply pursuing originality, what is the real purpose behind his grotesque collection of human materials?

Natsuko and Uchida eventually go to Kujō’s workshop to investigate, where they discover the horrifying truth behind his project — and the fate of his “ultimate creation”.

Reception:
Critics have been reasonably positive about its sheer audacity: Dread Central gave it 3.5/5, while But Why Tho? gave it 7/10, praising its splatter, social commentary and Ryu Ichinose’s performance.
