‘Brilliant. Bad. A little bit mad.’
Cruella is a 2021 American comedy crime film about the rebellious early days of notoriously fashionable villainess Cruella de Vil.
Directed by Craig Gillespie (I Tonya; The Finest Hours; Fright Night 2011) from a screenplay co-written by Dana Fox and Tony McNamara, based on a story co-written by Aline Brosh McKenna, Kelly Marcel and Steve Zissis, and the character from Dodie Smith’s 1956 novel The One Hundred and One Dalmatians.
The movie stars Emma Stone (La La Land), Emma Thompson, Mark Strong and Paul Walter Hauser.
In 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution, Estella, a young con artist and a clever and creative girl is determined to make a name for herself with her designs. She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they are able to build a life for themselves.
One day, Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of Baroness von Hellman (Emma Thompson), a fashion legend who is devastatingly chic and terrifyingly Haute. Unfortunately, their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous and revenge-bent Cruella…
“Director Craig Gillespie delivers a visual and aural feast that can sweep you away in its excess. Stone and Thompson bring compelling complexity to one-note characters, and the movie is at its best when they’re playing off each other […] Gillespie helms a stunning showcase of talent that culminates in a striking feature, but it’s narratively hollow.” Bloody Disgusting
“There’s no merchandising play (yet) or cheeky romantic subplot or forced CGI companions to undercut Stone and Thompson’s game performance (Fry and Hauser are also a hoot). Collectively, they infuse a breath of fresh air and clever intuitiveness to Dana Fox and Tony McNamara’s screenplay who aren’t afraid to let their primary antagonist be bad and unashamed.” The Only Critic
Cruella will be released on May 28th 2021.
