BACK ROAD (2021) Review of nasty hillbilly horror

‘Gone killing’

Back Road is a 2021 American horror film about a group of college kids messing around in the wrong neck of the woods.

Written, photographed, directed and edited by Andrew Pizzo (Shadow Slayer; I Saw). Executive produced by Benjamin Kall, Andrew Pizzo, Matt Scroger and Tom ‘Smitty’ Smith.

The movie stars Mike Sutton, J.P. Edwards, Eric Francis Melaragni, Melissa O’Donnell, Rachel Keefe, Sarah Schoofs, Amanda Kay Livezey, Emily McKinley Hill and Bryan DeSanto.

Madeline and her college friends take a mid-Summer vacation to their family’s cabin for one last get together before life starts to set in.

During the drugs-fuelled journey, they have a deadly encounter with one of the country folks which leads to them trying to cover up their tracks. When the country folks find out who they are and what they did, all hell breaks loose as they hunt down the inconsiderate city folks…

“Viewers are in for 94 minutes of particularly nasty and brutal death sequences, and not a whole lot else. There is an awkward comedy scene featuring two stoner cops, added in an attempt to lighten the mood. But it doesn’t really match the overall tone of the rest of the film […] Horror fans seeking something truly unforgiving might just have a good time with it.” Dread Central
