Golden Spider City is a 2022 Chinese action-adventure fantasy film that focuses on tomb raiders versus extraordinary spider monsters.
Directed by Dai Yilin (Mohist Mechanism; Vulcan: Legend of Jiuhe; Monster Hunters; The Pig King; Ferocious Monster Dragon; Mysterious Raiders and its sequel).
The Tianjin Rabbit Hole-Beijing Naifei co-production stars Liu Lincheng, Chen Mengqi, Sasha and Ning Xiaohua.
Our view:
Visually, there’s some splendid imagery in Golden Spider City with fantastic set designs and a floating galleon. Unfortunately, there’s also a plethora of CGI tomb imagery and creatures that make the movie often seem more like a video game with edited-in human characters. Hence, there’s no suspense or tension as everything seems unreal. And then there’s the non-stop juvenile tone and failed humour which is typical of these Chinese adventure fantasy films and soon becomes a tough watch.
If you have low expectations this might be worth a look, especially as it’s free online but most viewers will probably check out after half an hour of relentless CGI and silliness.
