SOMETHING (2018) Reviews and overview

Something is a 2018 American horror film written and directed by Stephen Portland. The Subspin Productions movie stars Michael Gazin, Jane Rowen, Joel Clark Ackerman and Eric Roberts.

Plot:

A man and woman are struggling to adjust to life with their new baby. However, their situation begins to unravel when they suspect a menacing stranger could be lurking, watching, even entering their home…

Reviews:

“Points must be given for its Raymond Carver-esque, nameless storytelling approach, which adds a dash of sophistication to its script, though this alone can neither make nor break the overall production. Overall, Something is an intriguing offering…” Jeannie Blue, Cryptic Rock

“Portland’s decision to keep things simple is the film’s greatest strength, helping to generate a sense of menace, create an effective antagonist and give the story a folkloric dimension that adds to its power. Working with an obviously small budget, he succeeds in demonstrating that he has some skill – just not enough to make many people want to sit through 86 minutes…” Jennie Kermode, Eye for Film

Something is a low-budget horror movie that works really well within its concept. The characters are engaging and portrayed very convincingly by its stars. Also, the story will probably be eerily relatable to many. Fair warning: Don’t watch this if you’re expecting or have a baby in the house.” Karina Adelgaard, Heaven of Horror

” …highly suspenseful vibes, solid storyline, and performances by co-leads Michael Gazin and Jane Rowen that weave together natural domesticity with uber creepy […] the film’s low budget actually resulted in a naturalness and authenticity that worked quite nicely with the performances and gave the film’s horror/mystery vibes a sense of normalcy…” Richard Propes, The Independent Critic

“The growing mystery is an intriguing one, and the deepening sense of paranoia is also handled very effectively. The movie is mostly an intense drama, but with glimpses of horror and perhaps the supernatural.” John Migliore, Indie Horror Online

“The fact it also manages to give us a cameo from Eric Roberts who is always good value is simply a bonus. Although there is nothing groundbreaking on show here, ‘Something’ is genuinely creepy, and for managing to achieve all that with what little he had to work with, I give Stephen Portland full credit and a round of applause.” Jolly Moel, Screen Critix

Something is a film that will divide genre fans, in fact for many it will be a love it or hate it kind of film. Writer/director Stephen Portland has constructed a subtle, deliberately paced film. One that’s as much a mood piece as a traditional horror film at times. But what a dark mood it is.” Jim Morazzini, Voices from the Balcony
