‘Every suspect fits a pattern’

The Outfit is a 2022 American drama in which an expert tailor must outwit a dangerous group of mobsters in order to survive a fateful night.

Directed by Graham Moore (director of The Waiting Room short; writer of The Imitation Game), making his feature directorial debut, from a screenplay co-written with actor Johnathan McClain. Produced by Ben Browning, Amy Jackson, and Scoop Wasserstein.

The movie stars Mark Rylance (Don’t Look Up; The Phantom of the Open; Ready Player One; The Gunman), Zoey Deutch, Dylan O’Brien, Johnny Flynn, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Simon Russell Beale and Alan Mehdizadeh.

The soundtrack score was composed by Alexandre Desplat.

Leonard (Mark Rylance) is an English tailor who used to craft suits on London’s world-famous Savile Row. However, after a personal tragedy, he’s ended up in Chicago, operating a small tailor shop in a rough part of town where he makes beautiful clothes for the only people around who can afford them: a family of vicious gangsters.

The Outfit does, unsurprisingly, also feel like a play. A handful of characters come & go inside a small shop and that’s it, and it could just as easily be performed on stage. Sometimes this bothers me, but not always, and this is one of those cases where the cinematic elements of the film make it just as worthwhile as a big-screen experience.” First Showing

The Outfit is an intriguing thriller that makes the most of its 50s setting and contains an array of strong performances, particularly Mark Rylance in the lead. At a sprightly 106 minutes it manages to cram numerous twists and turns without feeling overly complex and while perhaps not as original as some films that it could call influences it is worth audiences’ time…” Flickering Myth

” …the whole movie seems sometimes to be moving at about 80–90% of its required speed and energy. And there is also something stylised and slightly non-realistic about the way the nationwide mob is imagined to be an occult secret organisation called “the Outfit”, slightly different from the Cosa Nostra we already know about. But there is also a theatrical charm and composure to the performances…” 3/5 The Guardian

“In practically every respect except perhaps one (one too many late-film turns or twists), The Outfit’s interwoven elements succeed in delivering consistently engaging, enthralling entertainment, unsurprisingly led by the always watchable Mark Rylance, as precise and rigorous an actor working in cinema today…” Screen Anarchy

“Despite getting a little too cute for the room come finale time, The Outfit is a solid directing debut for an acclaimed screenwriter. And while you can’t help feeling that this salute to the brainy introvert may be a personal one for Moore, it’s artful and engaging enough to rope in anyone who loves untangling a well-fitted suit of clues.” UK Film Review

The Outfit’s cinematography is effective and neat, but ultimately unspectacular as it is somewhat limited by the single location. In a production with no shortage of remarkable actors, Rylance’s precise performance of the prim Englishman – buttoned up in both senses of the phrase – is the driving force of the film. Leonard’s keen perception is tailored to perfection.” The Upcoming

In the United States, Focus Features will release The Outfit theatrically in select locations and On-Demand on February 25th 2022.
