Pennywise: The Story of IT is a 2021 British fan-funded documentary directed by Chris Griffiths from a script by John Campopiano (Unearthed and Untold: The Story of Pet Sematary) and Gary Smart about the making of the 1990 television mini-series IT.

The documentary contains over fifty interviews with the cast and crew of IT as well as over seven hundred never-before-seen photos from the production and aims to “tell a story heard by few and showcase a wealth of behind-the-scenes footage and photos seen by even fewer.

From exploring the historical and cultural phenomenon of coulrophobia (the fear of clowns) to Tim Curry’s magical portrayal of Pennywise the clown to the impact Vancouver (aka “Hollywood North”) had on the 1990 made-for-TV miniseries, Pennywise: The Story of IT promises to dig deeper into the Pennywise phenomenon than anything ever has before.”

Bloody Disgusting adds: “…the film features exclusive interviews with many of the cult classic’s key players, from cast members Richard Thomas, Seth Green, and Tim Curry, who portrayed the notorious monster clown Pennywise, to director Tommy Lee Wallace and special effects makeup artist Bart Mixon.”

Release:
In the US, Pennywise: The Story of IT will be shown theatrically in select locations from July 8 onwards before releasing On-Demand (VOD) and via the Screambox streaming platform on July 26, 2022. It was previously available as a limited Blu-ray released by the filmmakers themselves.
