“Shin Ultraman reimagines the Tokusatsu legend for the modern day, courtesy of a creative team that has a deep love for the Ultraman mythos. Whether you’re a longtime Ultraman fan or not, Shin Ultraman is a great introduction to the character It’s also the best superhero film of 2022…” 9.5 out of 10, But Why Tho?
“Shin Ultraman is fun but lacks the punch and gravitas of its predecessor. Shin Godzilla wasn’t just a nostalgic reboot of a storied franchise […] Shin Ultraman is less interested in using a beloved character to probe modern Japan than it is in playing around with old toys. The good news is that there’s no one better at playing with old toys than these two filmmakers.” The Japan Times
“Yes, the characters are fairly thin and underwritten, wasting several well-known performers. But that’s a recurring theme in kaiju and effects-driven films in general […] Along with Kong: Skull Island it’s one of the most fun films of its kind since the 1990s Gamera trilogy.” 4.5 out of 5, Voices from the Balcony
Shin Ultraman will be released in Japanese cinemas on May 13, 2022
The new Ultraman design is based on a 1983 Ultraman painting ‘Incarnation of Truth, Justice and Beauty’ by Tohl Narita.
