Ghost in the Cell is a 2026 horror film set in a notorious prison where an invisible force kills inmates brutally, compelling enemy gangs and corrupt guards to work together as they try to survive the mounting bloodshed.
The plot combines supernatural horror, prison thriller, black comedy, social satire and extreme gore into a deliberately outrageous package.
The basic premise is simple: put a vengeful ghost inside a notoriously corrupt prison and give it a large population of violent criminals to kill. The twist is that the ghost appears to prey particularly on people with intense negative energy, forcing prisoners who normally survive through violence, intimidation and selfishness to discover the benefits of being positive and cooperative.
The movie was written and directed by Joko Anwar (Grave Torture; Satan’s Slaves 2: Communion; Impetigore; Gundala; Satan’s Slaves; The Forbidden Door).
The production stars Abimana Aryasatya, Bront Palarae, Endy Arfian, Aming Sugandhi and Arswendy Bening Swara.

Outside the prison, a journalist named Dimas is investigating government corruption and a possible cover-up. His investigation is abruptly interrupted when his boss is murdered by an unseen supernatural force. The corpse is left horribly mutilated and arranged almost like a grotesque work of art. Dimas is subsequently accused of the murder and ends up imprisoned in Labuhan Angsana prison.
The prison is effectively a microcosm of a corrupt society. Prison officials abuse their authority, guards accept privileges and bribes, wealthy or politically connected prisoners receive preferential treatment, and rival gangs fight among themselves.
Dimas becomes associated with Anggoro, a relatively good-natured inmate who refuses to completely submit to the prison’s brutal hierarchy. Their group includes a collection of criminals who provide much of the film’s comic relief. Then the killings begin.
Prisoners start dying in spectacularly gruesome and bizarre ways, with their mutilated bodies frequently arranged in elaborate tableaux. The killer cannot be seen and initially appears impossible to stop. The inmates gradually realise that they aren’t dealing with an ordinary murderer but with a vengeful supernatural entity.
The crucial discovery is that the ghost is attracted to people radiating intense anger, hatred and negativity. This creates one of the film’s central comic ideas: prisoners who have spent their lives being aggressive suddenly have to try to become better people simply to avoid being murdered.
The inmates consequently experiment with various ways of generating positive energy — including helping one another, praying, cleaning and even dancing. The absurdity of hardened criminals suddenly trying to behave wholesomely becomes one of the film’s principal sources of comedy.
But the supernatural threat ultimately exposes a larger problem: the prison itself is generating the negativity that feeds the ghost. Oppression, corruption and institutional violence are creating exactly the conditions that allow the entity to flourish.
The prisoners therefore face a choice: continue fighting among themselves and allow the system to destroy them, or put aside their rivalries and unite against both the supernatural threat and the people exploiting them…
