UGLY SWEATER PARTY (2018) Reviews and overview

‘Campy. Bloody. Sweatery.’

Ugly Sweater Party is a 2018 American supernatural comedy-horror slasher feature film written and directed by Aaron Mento (Standards of Living).

The Ocular Migraine Production stars Charles Chudabala (Death House), Sean Whalen (The People Under the Stairs), Felissa Rose (Sleepaway Camp), Brad Potts (Puppet Master X; Zombies vs. Strippers), Lara Jean Mummert (Anomaly) and Tiffani Fest (Circus of the Dead).

Plot:

On Christmas Eve, at a campsite deep in the woods, an ugly sweater party is in full swing. Best friends Cliff and Jody arrive expecting some mistletoe action from the foxy twins who invited them, but soon realise that they are at a Bible camp. To make matters worse, Cliff is wearing a sweater possessed by the ghost of notorious serial killer Declan Rains.

While the evil sweater slowly possesses Cliff, Jody also realises that the party guests aren’t as innocent as they first seem. In fact, every camper holds a dark secret that infuses the party with dangerous tension. Just when the pressure between campers reaches a fever pitch, Cliff falls victim to the bloodthirsty rage of the diabolical sweater and a new nightmare begins…

Reviews [click links to read more]:

“It is hard for any film made on such a micro-budget to look good, but if leant into the way this film does it can make for a fun, enjoyable experience. The blatant satirization of horror tropes displayed makes for a self-aware borderline parody project that near anyone can enjoy.” Cult Faction

“You know what you’re getting into with a movie like this. Cliff’s genital mutilation meat-yank? Gonzo to the point where my jaw dropped – but then characters start uttering irredeemable dialogue as CGI effects replace otherwise practical body objectification. Less is so much more in this case, which is unfortunate given how every gag goes the extra mile giggling itself stupid.” Flickering Myth

“I can honestly say that there were no scares, nor any laughs to be had in this supposed horror comedy. There is, however, a C-plot in which the groundskeeper of the camp loses his mind to the tune of a heavy metal band that plays live, in his cabin. There are long stretches of the film that play like a music video for this serviceable metal group.” Horror Buzz

“At the heart of it, it’s teenage, puerile banter laced with Xmas inspired camp horror and made me laugh out loud on more than one occasion. Well written sex jokes combined with some bloody gruesome effects makes this indie, low budget horror comedy something to be proud of.” Horror Cult Films

“All of the characters were fun, a bit eccentric, and enjoyable to watch. I particularly loved Cliff and Jody, the characters that Charles Chudabala and Hunter Thompson played. They were hilarious, played well off each other, and constantly surprised me with their actions. It was reminiscent of characters like Harold and Kumar, Bill and Ted, Cheech and Chong, and other great duos from the past…” PopHorror

“The effects are a mixed bag, though this probably had more to do with a lack of budget as a lack of talent. Ugly Sweater Party goes for over the top gore and effects, most of which are practical. The CGI seemed limited to the inevitable blood spray and some death ray blasts. Yes, the film has a death ray…” Voices from the Balcony
