‘When your dreams become your daytime nightmare’

Daytime Nightmare is a 2020 American psychological horror feature film about a young woman suffering from nighttime terrors… during the day.

Written, directed by and starring Katrina Grey – making her feature debut – the Grey Films production also stars David Asavanond, Christiana Chaiwanna, Alexander Winters, Raluca Porumbacu and Bonnie Zellerbach.

Review:

Lucy (Katrina Grey) is a beautiful and ambitious young lady who begins to follow her dreams of becoming an actress one day. She enrols in a theatre class and immediately bonds with her fellow acting colleagues, much to the chagrin of her introverted roommate and best friend, Sara (Christiana Chaiwanna).

Apparently, Sara has an unspoken need to be the centre of Lucy’s life and fears she will lose her companion to the new vivacious group of talent. What else is there to do, but turn Lucy into a paranoid recluse?

The road to success takes a creepy detour into the subconscious world within Lucy’s mind and manifests into complete submission of her realistic nightmares that continue throughout her days. Unbeknownst to her, there is a trusting antagonist creeping into her daily routine, subsequently sabotaging her newfound happiness and possible love connection with her cohort, Chris (Alexander Winters).

Through the acting exercises – which are not to be missed thanks to the intensity of teacher, Mr Shaw (Jonathan Samson), Lucy absorbs foreshadowing insight that becomes applicable to her everyday life… in particular, when dealing with changes in her home with Sara.

Daytime Nightmare is the directorial debut from Katrina Grey, who also wrote and stars in this alarming thriller. It is evident that Grey leads the charge through a haemorrhaging passage within her psyche to startling consequences. As her character Lucy teeters on the fence between practical and improbable instances, she slides into distressing despair, unable to halt the damaging daymares.

Nightmare disorders, night terrors and sleeping troubles have been such an interesting source of problematic stress and this film is an interesting dive into how these can affect and target victims during an unlikely moment – daytime.
