‘Beware of The Hangman’
Backwoods is a 2020 American slasher horror film about The Hangman, a deformed religious zealot who kills men and takes women as “brides”.
Directed by Thomas Smith from a screenplay co-written with Erin Lilley, the Fighting Owl Films production stars Jeremy Sande, Isabella Alberti, Tahj Vaughans and Michael Anthony Bagozzi. Produced by Kris Skoda.
Plot:
High school cheerleader Molly woke bound and gagged in the trunk of her boyfriend’s car. That was the high point of her night. After escaping her abductor and fleeing into the nearby forest, she comes face-to-face with the town urban legend: The Hangman, a deformed Christian nutter zealot said to hang male trespassers and keep his female victims as “brides”.
Now, Molly, along with her best friend and would-be rescuer Noah must work together to avoid becoming his latest victims…
Review:
” …there’s talk early in the film about conspiracies and cover-ups associated with the area and its inhabitants but nothing is ever done with that angle. Nor is The Hangman given much backstory. If he’s not the original killer who is he? And why is he disfigured? […] Hopefully, if there is a sequel it’ll have a bit more budget and make better use of its killer. Backwoods is miles ahead of films like Axegrinder 2 or Bone Breaker and should satisfy those who like these kinds of films.” Voices from the Balcony
