‘Something hungry is in the water’

Attack of the Giant Leeches is a 2008 Canadian comedy horror film about a spate of bloodless bodies that are found near a swamp.

Directed by Brett Kelly (Ghastlies; My Fair ZombieJurassic Shark) from a screenplay written by Jeff O’Brien (Bikini Girls from the Lost Planet and Ghost in A Teeny Bikini). It is a loose remake of Attack of the Giant Leeches (1959). The Dudez Productions movie stars Mark Courneyea, Kerri Draper, Kevin Preece and Shawna McSheffrey.

Plot:

In a small town, the silence is shattered by a rash of disappearances at the swamp near the old deserted factories. Bodies are being discovered with no blood left in their bodies. It’s up to a park ranger and the town sheriff to discover what ungodly creature is responsible for these deaths…

Reviews:

“The overriding conundrum that bugged me all throughout this remake was simply wondering why. Why do a remake of an ultra low budget bad movie from half a century ago if you’re not really going to try to make a better version of that film, go so far as to try and recreate aspects of the badness, and not even do so in an overtly campy fashion.” Dread Central

” …offers overlong conversations about emotional attachments and past relationships. There’s lame humor and wasted white trash antics […] Brett Kelly clearly had the right idea. Too bad he lacked the ability to fully realize it.” DVD Talk

“Overall, this movie is amateurish and trashy, and hardly worth spending any time on. That said, this was clearly a fan creation born of affection for the source material, and it does manage to improve on it in some key ways. Regardless, unless you really liked the original movie or have an affinity for this sort of low budget horror, this would be best to avoid.” Misan[trope]y

“This movie is just bad.  It is barely over an hour and is still padded to the brim.  The whole relationship plot is just dull and listless.  The leech attacks are stupid and shot almost entirely with monster P.O.V. shots. Guys, when you can’t make your monsters move – don’t bother! Even crappy SyFy Channel films manage to give us crappy but moving monsters.” Mondo Bizarro

“Corman delivered a production with camp and charm, ultimately pleasing the 50s audience, but today’s wants gore, blood, violence driven mayhem along with some T&A, along with gut-punching dialogue and retro feel, this contains none of it. Therefore, readers, don’t expose your eyes to this…” The Horror Times
