The Atoning is a 2017 American supernatural horror film written, co-produced and directed by Michael Williams. The movie stars Virginia Newcomb, Cannon Bosarge and Michael LaCour.

Plot:

Vera (Newcomb), Ray (LaCour), and Sam (Bosarge), a seemingly normal family, are haunted by more than mere ghosts. The lingering horror of their past threatens their ability to function as a loving family until they become enlightened by a mystical encounter.

From that moment on, they’re thrust into a horror worse than anything they’ve ever experienced. Personal demons manifest and tear the family apart from the inside out as they come to terms with their past…

Reviews:

“The demon in The Atoning is for the most part a hand here and there, you feel it’s presence, and when you do see the figure it’s scary and quick. It doesn’t linger. A lot can be said for leaving something to the imagination when it comes to monsters and ghouls. In the end, The Atoning is worth the watch if you like a nice slow release horror film.” Horror Talk

” …Bosarge does a lot with the role and his naturalness helps to give the film an edge that no amount of over-familiar moody lighting can achieve. When his ghostly visions reveal something sinister, it’s much easier to feel fear and concern than it is to connect with the consciously remote adults. Less sophisticated than it seems to think, The Atoning is nevertheless an effective little fable whose underlying horrors are very much a part of the real world.” Eye for Film

” …lethargic amateur acting, a belabored premise that spins its wheels getting going, and a demonic villain that is just a pantomiming performer in black greasepaint can’t come close to getting a rise out of anyone, particularly after they’ve been put to sleep by everything else in the film.” Culture Crypt

“The Atoning almost becomes arthouse horror, but there’s enough B-movie sensibilities about the piece for it to appeal to horror fans of all sorts. The movie is ultimately about the secrets we keep buried, those things we don’t want to face, but we must face, if we want to make spiritual progress. Clearly a passion project, The Atoning is a very good indie horror flick that’s definitely worth checking out.” Cultured Vultures
