Deus Irae is a 2023 Argentinian horror film about a trio of excommunicated priests who hunt the possessed down to exorcise them. The title translates into English as “God of Wrath”.
Written and directed by Pedro Cristiani (scripter of Moebius, 1996) based on his own 2010 short film of the same name. Produced by Molino Studio and Hudsonman.
The movie stars Pablo Ragoni, Gastón Ricaud and Sabrina Macchi.
Plot:
Father Javier (Pablo Ragoni) lives a fractured existence: on one side, he helps families who’ve witnessed miracles, and on the other, he belongs to a trio of excommunicated priests (including Gastón Ricaud and Sabrina Macchi) who hunt the possessed down to exorcise them under their terms: with Bibles, flames and shotguns. But when the only way to crush evil is by becoming something even worse… How much of your humanity – or your sanity – are you willing to sacrifice to defeat the Devil?
Background:
“The goal of Deus Irae was to develop a completely independent film that pushed the visual and storytelling boundaries like no genre feature dared to do,” Pedro Cristiani says. “But in the six years that took to bring it to completion, it became so much more: a volatile, highly stylised, fearless film.”
Release:
Deus Irae premiered at the 2023 Mar Del Plata Film Festival in Argentina in November 2023. XYZ Films has acquired the North American rights while Reel Suspects is handling the rest of the world.
“We first discovered the immensely talented Pedro Cristiani when the short film version of Deus Irae was travelling the global festival circuit and it has been an absolute thrill to work with him on bringing his vision for the full feature to the world,” said XYZ Films’ Todd Brown. “Pedro is an immense talent and Deus Irae is a totally unique work.”
