Screamboat is a forthcoming comedy horror film about a late-night boat ride that turns into a desperate fight for survival in New York City when a mischievous mouse becomes a monstrous reality. Can a motley crew survive a killer creature with a taste for tourists?
The movie somehow incorporates footage from the 1928 Disney short Steamboat Willie which was the debut of Mickey and Minnie Mouse and has recently become public domain.
Directed by Steven LaMorte (The Mean One; Bury Me Twice).
The Fuzz on the Lens Productions-Kali Pictures-Sleight of Hand Productions movie is currently in pre-production with filming due to begin soon. No cast details have been announced at the time of writing.
Release:
Iconic Events Releasing plans to release the film theatrically in the US on January 1, 2025.
Director Steven LaMorte has commented: “Steamboat Willie has brought joy to generations, but beneath that cheerful exterior lies a potential for pure, unhinged terror. It’s a project I’ve been dreaming of, and I can’t wait to unleash this twisted take on this beloved character to the world.”
LaMorte added: “It all comes from our love of these characters. Filmmakers — we’re all kids in the sandbox. We love taking them and playing with them in different ways. It’s not a desire to ruin these characters or make a quick buck, but to love them and honour them and show them in a new light.”
Screamboat will use a mix of “practical creature effects, miniatures, and cutting edge virtual production to showcase its very mischievous monster slashing his way through a ferry of fear.” Steamboat Willie, specifically, will be “brought to horrific life by a mix of classic practical puppets and traditional prosthetic makeup.”
Perplexingly, is the second horror movie based around the Steamboat Willie version of Mickey Mouse. The first film, Mickey’s Mouse Trap is a Canadian production, that is currently in post-production.
