HELLRAISER: JUDGEMENT (2017) Reviews and overview

‘Evil seeks evil.’

Hellraiser: Judgement – aka Hellraiser X: Judgement is a 2017 American horror film written and directed by FX and makeup artist Gary J. Tunnicliffe (Waxwork II; Feast; The Hive). The Puzzle Box Pictures/Dimension Films movie stars Damon Carney, Randy Wayne, Alexandra Harris and Heather Langenkamp.

Detectives Sean and David Carter are on the case to find a gruesome serial killer terrorizing the city.

Joining forces with Detective Christine Egerton, they dig deeper into a spiralling maze of horror that may not be of this world. Could the Judgment awaiting the killer’s victims also be waiting for Sean?

Reviews [click links to read more]:

“Overall, the lack of resources soak the screen, but it adds to the film’s grotesque charm. And even with budgetary limitations, the special effects never suffer. Solely for Hellraiser apologists, Judgment does just enough to warrant its existence.” Bloody Disgusting

Cinema Snob YouTube review

“It’s clunky, widely uneven, and thematically preachy, but Hellraiser: Judgment is hands down the best straight-to-DVD entry in the franchise, far surpassing InfernoHellseekerDeaderHellworld, and Revelations. It’s hard-boiled, procedural motifs make this installment a reboot of the franchise and a virtual remake of Inferno specifically (as that film also centered on a detective drawn into a dark underworld of sex and sin).” Horrorfreak News

“Though fairly regardable as a decent low-budget knock-off of Se7en, Hellraiser: Judgment is not only infinitely superior to its predecessor, Hellraiser: Revelations, but it is also one of the best in the overall Hellraiser series after the original three or four films before they transcended into the realm of direct-to-video. Under the creative genius of Gary J. Tunnicliffe, Hellraiser: Judgment successfully breathes new life into the franchise.” Nerdly

“It’s a collection of cool concepts and infernal imaginary, but, ultimately, it’s just another nail in the coffin of the franchise. The story is unclear, the exposition is neglected, the camera isn’t intimate and therefore we don’t care about the characters.” Tales of Terror

Hellraiser: Judgment offers some interesting new characters and ideas, but fails to really explore or explain much beyond what little we’re shown. Aside from that the movie doesn’t even feel like a Hellraiser film, as it could have easily been passed off as another underground no-budget horror movie had discount Pinhead not shown up.” Upcoming Horror Movies

Release:

Hellraiser: Judgment was released in the USA on Digital, Blu-ray and DVD on February 13, 2018.

Writer/director Gary J. Tunnicliffe previously commented:

“To the fans, I would say this… I know you’ve been let down, and trust me, I have too, but simply give me a chance. I know we can never make a film as great as the first two Hellraiser‘s, I wouldn’t even attempt to do so, but I think we have a fun script here an opportunity with an amazing cast and crew to give you all something that feels a little familiar, a little different, completely terrifying and is a worthy part of the Hellraiser Canon… oh and of course if you want blood?… well you’ve got it!”

The producers (at Tunnicliffe’s request) contacted Damon (Sean Carter) Carney’s wife and secretly obtained stories and intense moments from his past that were then (without his prior knowledge) used during the scene when he is ‘Audited’ – at the end of the (lengthy and harrowing) take Carney yelled out ‘What the f**k just happened!… I was genuinely freaked out!’
