Mako is a 2021 action horror film about a group of documentary filmmakers that decide to explore a sunken wreck that exudes negative energy.

Directed by Mohamed Hesham El-Rashidy from a screenplay co-written by Ahmed Halim, Mohamed El Hafnawy and Ahmed Sharaf Elsayed, based on a story by Ahmed Halim. Produced by Mohammed al Sharif, Al Shaymaa Mashaal and Sameh Mohsen.

The Egyptian production stars Basma, Murat Yildirim, Nicolas Mouawad, Nahed El Sebaï and Ahmed Shawky Shaheen.

Review:

“The imagery used to sell Mako is that of any classic shark horror movie. And that’s a mistake! This movie isn’t as much about sharks as it is about personal drama […] And since the sharks are in the water, you’ll only see glimpses of sharks in that first act. All of which seems mostly gratuitous more than relevant.” 2 out of 5, Heaven of Horror

Mako doesn’t overuse the shark and mostly concentrates on the characters, which I consider a misstep. As mentioned earlier, they are disposable, and the film uses them for surface-level insights and observations. Why not dial up the fun (and terror) by converting the shark into a more formidable presence rather than making it appear and disappear as per convenience?” 5 out of 10, Midgard Times
