THE LURKER (2019) Reviews and overview

The Lurker is a 2019 American horror film about a group of theatre students, celebrating their final show, that begins to disappear one at a time.

Directed by Eric Liberacki from a screenplay written by John Lerchen, the movie stars Scout Taylor-Compton (Getaway; Feral; Ghost House; Rob Zombie’s Halloween and sequel; et al), Naomi Grossman (Sky Sharks; Bite Me; Fear, Inc.; American Horror Story), Ari Lehman (Silk Scream; Scarred; Friday the 13th, 1980; et al) and Domenica Cameron-Scorsese.

Reviews:

“Even when it fails in several technical and narrative aspects, it presents an interesting story and an unexpected well-crafted turn near the end. The Lurker is a movie influenced by the great slashers of the ‘80s, shown with the clear reference to Crystal Lake and the explicit gore, but that never finds the key that made these movies memorable.” The 10th Circle

“Other than Scout Taylor-Compton, acting is stiffly amateurish. The teen girls are okay, but the adult men have wooden personalities equating them to oversized ventriloquist dummies. The problem starts with the silly script’s obvious obsession with creating red herrings that are little more than goofy guppies […] The Lurker isn’t the worst self-produced DTV slasher I’ve ever seen, but it certainly is bizarrely cut, cast, and conceived.” Culture Crypt

“Slow spots and improbable story points are pretty much forgiven once the action gets going, which it does in fairly good style for such a modest, well – meaning shocker. The Lurker sets out to be a bloody 80s-style slasher that doesn’t kid around, and it does so in entertaining fashion.” HK and Cult Film News

” …the film is badly hurt by its casting of Compton in the lead role. She’s way too old for the part and looks it […] Thankfully, The Lurker has enough going for it to survive this bit of miscasting. There’s a decent amount of suspense and mystery. It has more in the way of gore and effects than a lot of lower-budget films. And it has a twist that, for once, you won’t guess in the first act.” Voices from the Balcony
