Mutation on Mars is a 2021 Chinese science fiction action horror film about a research mission that accidentally released lethal organisms.

Directed by Liu Na from a screenplay co-written by He Xin and Jiang Gu Shi. The movie stars Shi Liang, Liu Xin Qi and Sim Zuoyu.

In the near future, the Earth’s resources are gradually getting scarce. In order to continue the hope of survival for generations of children and grandchildren, top scientists from various countries have brought several species of animals and plants to Mars for research, hoping to improve the Martian environment through advanced science and technology to make it suitable for human habitation.

In the experiment, as the life forms of the gene-seed bank grew, the development of the situation began to lose control, and the organisms mutated, possessing strong attack power and certain intelligence, and all the experts of the Mars Project Alliance were at stake.

China sent astronauts to rescue Mars. Faced with the double crisis of attacking and killing mutant creatures and the imminent impact of asteroids on Mars, Chinese astronauts, regardless of personal safety, race against time to complete the rescue mission… [translated from Chinese source with propaganda caveats]

“Director Na Liu does a good job of keeping the pace fast and the plot moving along. She gets help from the VFX team, the CGI, which is usually horrible in these films, is convincing. The model work is also surprisingly well done for a change […] Mutation on Mars is a step forward for Chinese science fiction and creature films in terms of its effects and action scenes. But in terms of plotting it’s a step back.” Voices from the Balcony
