Crocodile Island is a 2023 monster movie in which people who are shooting a reality TV series are attacked and killed by a crocodile.
Directed by Zhou Jingfeng. The Chinese production stars Zhenqi Qi, Maolei Wang and Huai Wen.

Plot:
A group of people gather on an island to shoot a reality TV series with the lure of winning a big sum of money if they can find a hidden golden egg. However, before shooting begins, some members of the film crew are attacked and killed by a crocodile.

One by one, the group are also quickly hunted by a gang of crocodiles that live on the island, until it is revealed that the cast and crew all knew each other from a summer camp a decade earlier where they bullied a young boy who ended up being eaten by one of the crocs.

Our review:
What’s in a name? While this might have a duplicate title from a previous Chinese monster movie from 2020, these two movies don’t really share anything else other than the fact there are crocodiles in it, and it’s set on an island. Yet, it’s easy to see how that could be confusing.

Don’t expect a high production value or an ending that makes sense. In typical Chinese monster movie fashion, all the characters are rather grotesque caricatures of undesirable stereotypes. There is a rich tough guy who is anything but, there is a golddigger who throws herself at any and everyone she can, a pair of friends who are mad at each other for stealing business ideas and a brooding anti-hero who is there solely to protect his neglected sister.

And then of course there is the silly ending that makes no sense, especially when you try and figure out how the wristband that the main antagonist is wearing works!

The crocs themselves are a nice blend of puppets and CGI. They mostly look good, considering they’re usually shown from a distance or a split second. But there is no real standout moment in the film that will make this a memorable title, and honestly, there are far better Chinese crocodile films out there.

I did like the Friday the 13th style surprise ending the film had, I really didn’t see that twist coming, but I should have because it’s becoming rather common. Check Crocodile Island (2023) out but don’t expect anything other than a bit of a laugh.
